Freelancer or Agency? Where Freelancers Hold Growing Businesses Back

On this page 5 sections
  1. Growth needs several skills at the same time
  2. Nobody owns the number that matters
  3. One person is one point of failure
  4. What an agency should give you instead
  5. When we'd tell you to hire a freelancer

We should say this upfront, because we're an agency and you'd expect us to take a side: some of the best marketers we know are freelancers. If you need a logo, a one-off landing page or a few months of help with a single channel, a good freelancer is often the smartest money you'll spend.

The trouble starts later. A business grows, the marketing needs grow with it, and the freelancer setup that worked at the start begins to hold things back. It rarely happens all at once, which is why it's easy to miss.

Growth needs several skills at the same time

Take a setup that's common among growing businesses in Hyderabad. One freelancer runs the Meta ads, another posts on Instagram, a third built the website two years ago and replies to WhatsApp messages when he has time. Each of them is decent at their part.

But the ads send people to a landing page that loads slowly on mobile. Nobody set up proper conversion tracking, so the ads freelancer is optimising for clicks rather than enquiries. The Instagram content and the ads say different things about the same offer. None of these problems belongs to any one person, so none of them gets fixed. And the owner, who hired freelancers to save time, ends up spending evenings coordinating them.

Nobody owns the number that matters

Ask each freelancer how things are going and you'll usually hear good news. Reach is up. Cost per click is down. The new page went live. It's all true, and it can all be true while enquiries fall.

That's not dishonesty. Each person is reporting on the part they were hired for. What's missing is someone whose job is the business result: how many leads came in, what they cost, and how many became paying customers. Without that person, marketing turns into a list of tasks rather than a plan.

One person is one point of failure

Freelancers get sick, take holidays, land bigger clients, or accept full-time jobs. That's normal life, but when one person runs a whole channel, your campaign pauses with them. It always seems to happen just before Diwali or the week you launch something.

There's a quieter version of the same risk. Ad accounts, analytics, domain logins and the reasoning behind two years of decisions often sit with the freelancer. When they move on, some of that walks out the door. Whoever you hire, keep every account in your company's name. It's the simplest protection there is.

What an agency should give you instead

A good agency isn't just several freelancers under one logo. The value is that one team works to one target, the person planning the strategy talks to the person running the ads every day, and someone is accountable when the numbers drop. Work carries on when somebody is away, and decisions are written down, so you're never starting from zero.

Yes, it usually costs more per month than one freelancer. The fair comparison is three or four freelancers, plus your own time spent managing them, plus the growth you miss while problems sit between their jobs.

When we'd tell you to hire a freelancer

We'd say this to any business that asks us. If you already have an in-house marketer who sets the direction, a specialist freelancer can be the perfect addition. If you need one thing done well, with a clear brief and an end date, a freelancer is usually faster and cheaper. And if your budget only stretches to one channel for now, it's better to do that one channel properly than to spread thin.

Whichever way you go, ask the same few questions. Who owns the growth target, not just the tasks? What happens if this person is unavailable for a month? Are all the accounts in our name? And how will we know, every week, whether it's working?

Not sure whether you need a freelancer or a team? We'll tell you honestly, even if the answer isn't us.
